A few years ago, our little town of Leander existed
as a relatively quiet community north of the capitol metroplex of Austin.
Situated on U.S. Highway 183 near the western edge of Williamson County,
our small municipality is now one of the fastest growing cities in the
State of Texas. The bustling community has many young families with children,
and Leander has had to move quickly to try and keep pace with the ever-
growing demand for high quality parks and recreational facilities. In 2004,
the citizens passed a bond package that included funding for parks. The
monies from the bond went towards the renovation of Leander’s city-owned
park (Robin Bledsoe Park), the creation of Mason Creek Neighborhood Park,
and the development of Devine Lake Regional Park.
Leander has also acquired additional lands by purchase and parkland dedication
to begin to meet recreational and open space facilities needs of the citizens.
In December 2005, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved a grant
proposal to help build a new park in the Benbrook Ranch Subdivision known
as the Benbrook Ranch Regional
Park. Benbrook Ranch development will help satisfy the growing demand for
open space, trails, and athletic fields.
